Cameroon:Fundong Council Market Goes Up In Flames

Fundong Market

More than 56 market sheds were consumed by the fire outbreak that broke out Friday, February 3, 2023

Wild fire ravaged at least 56 sheds at the Fundong Council market in the Boyo division of the North West region Friday, February 3, 2023. No human life was lost but material damage is estimated to be huge.

Some shop owners were spotted on the site early morning frantically looking for items that might have been spared by the ravaging fire.

The prompt reaction of the forces of law and order and the population helped to check the fire from spreading further, said the Mayor of Fundong Council, Denis Awoh Ndang.

“Night Vigils discovered the fire outbreak a little after midnight on Friday, February 3, 2023,” the mayor said in a press release.

“It was a few minutes after the return of electricity following a blackout suffered since 4 p.m. on Thursday, February 2,  2023.”

He said an emergency disaster fund, jointly managed by the Council and victims of the fire incident, has been opened at the Fundong Council Chambers to assist those who incurred losses.
