Cameroon: The University Of Buea Commits To Endlessly Serve As Vector For Capacity Building

The University of Buea during the three–day event showcased its 30 years of academic excellence with the assurance to continue impacting the future through innovative solutions

The University of Buea, UB, has celebrated its 30 years anniversary with the challenge to modernize and adapt to the changing educational paradigms. Talking at the event which ran from May 25 to 27, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Ngomo Horace Manga, said the event was to celebrate the impact of the University in the academic landscape. He noted that for 30 years, UB has graduated thousands of students and contributed in building capacity in the youth. ‘‘All the time, we are improving on our curriculum, diversifying and expanding the courses we give as the economic landscape is changing. As an institution we must modernize, adapt ourselves to the changing educational paradigms to new knowledge, to insert ourselves squarely into the information and communication technology,’’ the VC said. Celebrated under the theme; ‘University of Buea, Impacting the Future Together Through Innovative Solutions’, anniversary event featured sports, community human investment, alumni conferences, open day/exhibitions, and a fundraising for projects.

The ceremony with major activities at the Dorothy Limunga Njeuma Amphi Theatre took place in the presence of former Vice Chancellors, staff and students as well as the Alumni of the University. Three decades of experience in teaching, research and outreach, ecumenical services opened celebrations on day one and during the closing ceremony marking 30 years of the Anglo Saxon University. The clergy gave reverence to God for 30 years of academic excellence and resilience.

Professor Edward, Ako Oben, Pro-Chancellor of the University of Buea, who represented the Minister of State, Minister of Higher Education, challenged the administrative, teaching staff and students of the University to be innovative in order to contribute to the country’s economic growth. ‘‘From what I have seen which I will report to the Minister of Higher Education, the 30th anniversary was a success. The good thing is that UB has recorded more successes than failures. It was good to evaluate the distance covered and prepare for the next twenty years when the University will be celebrating its 50th anniversary’’, he said.

The celebration highlighted the University’s original story and rich history of excellence. According to the pioneer Vice Chancellor of the University of Buea, Professor Dorothy Limunga Njeuma, UB should continue being a pacesetter on the higher education landscape in Cameroon. ‘‘It should continue to be a University of excellence, quality not only in Cameroon but in the world. I count it a special blessing to be here and to say that I am extremely proud of what UB has achieved in 30 years’’, she noted. Aligning impact through innovative solutions, students from all faculties for three days exhibited products peculiar to their departments.
