World Olympic Day:Celebrations In Form Of Reflections

Round table discussions were held at the Cameroon National Pierre de Courbertin Committee yesterday

Observed each year on June 23, the World Olympic Day is celebrated to promote the values of friendship, excellence and respect within the Olympic movement. The Cameroon National Pierre de Courbertin Committeelast Tuesdayorganised a roundtable discussion to celebrate the event.

Held on the theme “Move, learn and discover”, the brainstorminghad as speakers, Mrs Odette Engoulou, member of the International Olympic Committee, on the topic “Is Cameroonian sports still valuable”; Mr Augustin Edjoa Vice President of the Cameroon National Pierre de Courbertin Committee and Francoise Mbango double Olympic triple jump champion under the moderation of Dr Emmanuel Bakena, director of thePierre de Courbertin Institute.

Yesterday, sporting activities were organised to round up activities in celebration at the Francoise MbangoInstitute of Sports and Physical Education.The World Olympic Day, for the second year running, will not be celebrated with fanfare due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The President of the Cameroon National and Sports Committee said they will continue to sensitise athletes on how to stay away from the virus. The cautioning goes especially to athletes that will take part in the Tokyo Olympic Games as very strict barrier measures have been put in place.

The President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach in his address to celebrate the day said, the celebration is more special because the power of sports is more significant amidst the fight against COVID-19 pandemic. The IOC President said when athletes will gather during the Olympic Games they will send a message of peace, solidarity and resilience.
