Cameroon/AFCON2021: Salah Saves Pharaohs in Garoua

Egypt v Guinea Bissau

The Pharaohs got their campaign back on track thanks to Liverpool man who volleyed in a sublime strike 20 minutes from time last Saturday at the Roumnde Adja stadium in Garoua

Mohamed Salah was the match winner as Egypt snatched a much-needed victory against Guinea Bissau last Saturday as they bounced back from their opening day defeat to Nigeria.

His close range left-footed volley 20 minutes from time ensured the Pharaohs keep their chances of progressing to the next round intact ahead of their last group game against Sudan.

Much had been expected from the Liverpool front man after his quiet performance in the first game and he did step up to claw his team back into the competition against a resilient Guinea Bissau side that was very much in the game.

He had several other attempts that either went off the target or were punched out by Guinea-Bissau’s keeper, Jonas Mendes. A flicker was only sighted when Salah connected to volley a pass over the top at the edge of the six-yard box for the winner.

Gunea Bissau Denied By VAR

But the Egyptians had to sweat it out for the victory. Guinea Bissau thought they had snatched a late equalizer when Mama Balde wriggled his way past Omar Abdelwahed before curling a beautiful effort past the Egyptian goalkeeper. However, VAR brought back play and replays showed the Guinean forward had a tug on Omar’s shirt and the goal was ruled out.

Guinea immediately went back to action, and posing yet another threat to the Pharaohs. At Injury time, Moreto Cassama unleashed another volley that would be punched away by Egypt’s keeper, Mohamed El Shenawy.

The win takes Egypt to the second position with three points and they look forward to taking more points from next Wednesday’s match when they face Sudan. They will need just a draw from the match, if the Super Eagles continue in their winning ways. The eagles face Guinea Bissau on Wednesday. For Guinea-Bissau to keep hopes of progressing to the round of 16, that is, seeing the second round, they must beat Nigeria in their next match.

‘We Will Fight Till The End,’-Mohamed Salah

We have a new coach and a new generation is coming through so we will always need time. After the defeat against Nigeria we had to talk to ourselves and put a few things in order. We know this competition is very tough but we believe in ourselves and we know we can fight till the end and that is what we will keep doing.
