The Berea picked up the Bronze medal after snatching victory at the death thanks to a one nil victory over Niger last Friday

A late strike from forward Jean Razafindrakoto handed Madagascar a one nil victory over Niger to clinch the bronze medal of the 2022 African Nations Championship last Friday.

The striker grabbed the winner in the 90th minute to seal the win at the Miloud Hadefi Stadium in the Algerian city of Oran.

Razafindrakoto was the quickest to react when Niger goalkeeper Mahamadou Djibo spilled a shot into the striker’s path who wasted no time to strike home from close range.

The victory rounded off a sensational tournament for Madagascar for were appearing for their first participation in the tournament.

After the two sides played out a goalless draw in the first half, but Madagascar had the best chance of the game in added time of the first half when Mario Carlos forced a save from Tanji before the ball fell to Olivier Randriatsiferana who skied from inside the box.

Niger had good opportunities in the second half to break the deadlock but Adamou Ibrahim, Ousseini Badamassi and Hainikoye all missed their chances.

With the game almost heading to extra time, Jean Razafindrakoto was alert to pounce on Mahamadou Djibo’s error to hand Madagascar victory at the death.

Madagascar will take plenty of joy from their first ever participation at the CHAN while for Niger, the Menas leave on two consecutive defeats but can be proud of upsetting big names like Cameroon and Ghana on their way to the fourth place finish.
