COVID-19: Vaccination Effervescence Growing

The exercise launched last week has gained steam in the various health districts across the country with the campaign aimed at boosting immunization

The nationwide vaccination campaign against the COVID-19 has gathered momentum in all the health districts across the country.

Launched last Wednesday, July 7, the regional delegations of Public Health have been coordinating activities at the various regions to ensure the exercise is effective.

It is the case in the Littoral Region where the Regional Delegate of Public Health, Dr Albert Mambo Maka launched the exercise at various sites, notably at the Douala General Hospital where he encouraged the population to take the vaccines. He equally visited the Logbaba, Nylon and Deido health districts where the campaign had gathered steam with volunteers lining up to take their own dose of the vaccine.

Vaccination teams from the New Bell Health district on their part visited the Douala Central Prison last week to sensitise prisoners on the virus before administering doses of the vaccines to volunteers who showed up.

Away from Douala, the vaccination exercise is effective in other parts of the region like Nkondjock where teams braved the road conditions to access enclave communities for sensitization. A group of Indians who were in the community used the opportunity to get vaccinated from the vaccination caravan.

At the Pouma health district in the Sanaga Maritime Division, health teams targeted the various mosques on Friday at the end of prayers where they vaccinated Muslim faithful who volunteered for the exercise while they were also at various churches last Sunday for the same exercise.

Over in the South West Region, the vaccination exercise was launched by the Regional Delegate of Public Health, Dr Zacheus Ebongo Nanje who urged the population to go for the vaccines.

“ I wish to encourage the entire population of the South-West to go and get vaccinated because it is the only efficient way to kick out COVID-19,”he said.

The target for the fixed and the mobile caravan teams in the region is to administer about 50,000 doses of the Sinopharm and AstraZenecca vaccines.

Thus, mobile teams have been moving around neighbourhoods and communities like Mile 16, Bomaka, Muea and environs to sensitise the population on the disease and the need to take the vaccine as the best way to remain safe.

In the North West Region, the Regional Delegate of Public Health, Dr Kingsley Che Soh went round a few health districts to take stock of the exercise in that part of the country.

At the Bamenda health district, 11 centres, eight mobile teams and three others set up in strategic locations are carrying out the exercise. According to the District Medical Officer, Dr Gilbert Nsoh, the aim is not only to get more people vaccinated but to ensure they are sensitized in order to remain alerts and continue respecting barrier measures.

The campaign continues smoothly in other parts of the country with the target being to improve on the numbers vaccinated and strengthen immunization.

According to statistics from the Expanded Programme for Vaccination, at least 49 458 persons had been vaccinated from at least 84 percent of the health districts nationwide. Among them, 45612 were for the first dose while 3858 but the figures have since moved up as the days have gone by.
